August Cement Shipments Drop Slightly 

Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in August 2023 were an estimated 10.6 million metric tons (Mt), a slight decrease from shipments in August 2022, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Of total blended tonnage reported in August 2023, 5.7 Mt (98%) was estimated to be portland-limestone cement (Type IL). 

Shipments for the year through August totaled an estimated 71.0 Mt, a slight decrease from those for the same period in 2022. The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in August were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Alabama. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Ohio, and Georgia, in descending order) received 37.5% of August shipments.

Masonry cement shipments totaled an estimated 206,000 metric tons, a 15.4% decrease from those in August 2022 but essentially unchanged from masonry cement shipments in August 2020. Shipments for the year through August totaled an estimated 1.6 Mt, a 4.6% decrease from those for the same period in 2022. 

The leading masonry cement-consuming states in August 2023 were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, Georgia, Tennessee, California and North Carolina; these states received 58.8% of August shipments.

Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled an estimated 6.8 Mt in August 2023, a 6.1% decrease from production in August 2022. Production for the year through August totaled an estimated 49.5 Mt, a 4.0% decrease from the same period in 2022. The leading clinker-producing states during the month were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Alabama.
